keeping in theme with things at the moment.

Please ANYONE if you think you have skills or strengths in the area of running a non-profit record label please post them here... This would be great to just kind of gather ideas and to see who wants to be involved to take to the meeting after Swampfest.

I think Rolf Harris used a handsaw bent under his chin on Stairway to Heaven.

Anyway, I know myself and Stu are Qualified Artists (and probably others)
So I suggest we band together and form an 'Art Dept.' of sorts.
Posters/CD Artwork/Logos/Other Assorted shit.

great idea about forming a 'art dept' side to slave skeletor, i too would be willing to help with posters and the like.
i think its really important that we get gigs up and running again after the guvs crash, and events orgainizing is something i would like to be part of and help out with.
'the break' has taken a n interest in our local music scene and are willing to give us a shot with a few gigs. what does everyone else think about this place as a prospective regular venue? (slightly off topic?!)

Thats an interesting idea, one that I'm pretty sure was bought up over a year ago and heaps of people were all like 'Yeah I can do that...'

Talk < Action

I personally believe that having good artists doing posters is an essential factor to effective street promotion as good art attracts people to your posters, and they're more likely to end up on peoples walls after the shows. It's been wicked seeing Skeletor doing posters recently and seeing the evolution of his posters as he's started the hang of the software (well thats been my perception)

Yeah thats an interesting one... its a shame that Soren Olsen is involved with the place.

twas just a suggestion

for sure gotta walk the talk, and i'm sure if there were more opportunities for this then people would follow through with it a bit more, an example is i have alwAys wanted to help out with posters and shit, but most of the time these were already done, usually by yourself or murray, which was/is fantastic for sure but there wasnt much chance to help out (with posters).
Anyway it is such a small part of the whole, there are other things worth focusing on at the moment, i just liked skeletors suggestion about 'banding together' more/ sharing ideas and the like

Yeah I think posters can be quite a personal thing... hence why I prefer to do them for my band. I guess when it comes to say Black Chrome there is a certain type of imagery that we would like our audience to associate with the band, it's part of promoting your band not just as a band... if that makes sense.

I know I have heaps of posters already made on my pc just waiting for shows to come up so that they can be used...

Maybe then thats how you could be effective in that respect, ie to have artists submit their work so that when a band needs some imagery for their gig they can come to you and you have a folder of art for them to choose from?

But then again I know I would be gutted if my art was used for a band I didn't like... lol

:?

Well I'm willing to help out, but only really have technical expertise to offer the collective - web coding, php, databases etc I'm all good at.

And advice for web publication I guess, archive.org and etc.

not sure what I can do from 10 000 miles away.... I do want to help. I'm not very computer savvy unfortunately, but I am here often posting, although will more than likely be away from it for the next month or so due to holiday with my folks being here. I can offer advice, and be a bitch online lol.... if anyone thinks there are other things I could do from afar, then let me know (PM might be easiest). I want to help out if I can.

See now we are talking! Its great to see enthusiasim again ( alll be it mostly from arty folks and techies but hey, musos ain't known for their non-music work ethic most of the time:-) )

I really hope you guys can fix up the venue thing. It was pretty horrible to hear that govs is no longer a viable venue for local-only gigs. What is wrong that guy at The Break btw? I am so out of the loop.

I agree with what Snuff said about poster art being personal, their are ways around it-obviously you probably enjoy the creation of the posters so you could just opt out, but here are some of my thoughts on this and some other stuff, I have been thinking this over the last couple of days...bear with me! ( again lol)

Profiles

Each band makes a profile (like a press kit..which we ALL should have already, oops) for $lave to have. This would be in hard copy andalso enterd into a data base. In the profile:

MEMBERS Who is a member, who does what, and what other bands are they in.

GENRE/DISCRIPTION/COMPARISONS ( we can get abit upity around here about that hehe)

ART PREFERENCES eg, no nazi shit, no vegetarian properganda, heaps of skulls, heaps of bunny rabbits etc

BIO if you canget itfrom another source eg a news paper,so it can be quoted and sourced

WORK AVAILIBILITY This is a biggy, it was very bad for me with the Hendersons, Snuff would get us a gig ( which is a good thing) and I couldn't play it.
I got in alot of shit at work, and had some pretty close calls returning from out of town gigs, almost missing shifts etc
We all experience this, and I really believe we should get this sorted if we are to have members promoting and hooking up gigs. We all love laying gigs, but we can't afford new strings without a job, and if you don't want to play covers in a poppy pub then you gotta go to 'real' work.

OFFICIAL PHOTO(S) For use in papers, ads, web whatever. Just make sure you WANT people to see the mullet your sporting.

DEMO TRACKS/CD Your most up to date work if possible. 3 tracks is enough, with a note of perferred track and terms of use. For use in any thing that may crop up, though permission should be sort is used in any commercial capacity.Highest quality possible-ie NO mp3s. If 'we' need mp3 they can be easily made from your supplied WAV or Aiff quality tracks.

WORK HISTORY/GIG HISTORY What gigs have you played in the last few years and where.

LOGO This can be used for web, and poster design etc.

GEAR LISTThis should be optional and done on a member to member basis What you have and what you are willing to lend out for use. This is a topic close to all our hearts, many hate the idea of sharing thier pride and joy, some don't mind, some don't mind but have strict conditions. This could save alot of time when planning an out of town gig or in a last minute breakdown/amp meltdown.

This can also apply to home recording gear and/or expertise. If you are willing to help record, master tracks, do sampling, or whatever. Probably not lend out this sorta gear...it can be abit $$$$ and shit like insurance can be a nightmare.

PREVIOUS RELEASES A list of the band/artists previous releases. Perhaps even, once we have or shit sorted ie somewhere 'official' we supply these current releases on disc to be archived. Not played. If they are CDRs they will need reburning after a time or so, but I think in the lng run this could be very beneficial (and perhaps embarressing lol).

These can also be stored on a hard drive, perhaps when we are all rich or whatever a dedicated hard drive with all of Slaves releases, scanned art work, news clippings and gig posters!!!! Pipe dream? Perhaps but a cool trip down memory lane or a total trip out for any new or next gen $laves wanting to know the musical history of our pale grey city.

This may all sound very hard to do, but most of us will have most of this shit just sitting gathering dust around their PC, or beneath the desk. All of this could be supplied to slave on one single data CD ( except all previous albums in a non-compressed format)

With this one disc we could have all the relevant info for each band on one centeral computer, or even have all relevant info uploaded onto the website ( i don't know our space restrictions and bandwidth,so the sound probably would be out).

A data DVD could be made every 3 or 6 months updating the data from the previous quarters edition This could then be distributed to all major contributors to art, promotion and at a small $ to anyone just wanting to be nosey.

We already have a basic model set up by Snuff on the band page of this but if we want to get serious about our music and about $lave I suggest we make it mandatory to submit one of these 'Info-Kits' to $lave to continue membership or to join.

There can be no complaints about mismatched gig dates, bad gig matches (eg playing with a boy band when you info states you are a death-metal band) etc when the information is given directly from the band.

I know this suggests the need of a secutary or clerk. We do need a centeral hub once again, like a Flat or something other than the web where we can find the info or get the answers we need.

This is extremely hard in real life to achieve, but I hope somehow we can sort it,nothing grand just even a designated persons house perhaps where access is available often, without them ( or their partner/spouse/flatmates) getting annoyed from the last minute late night telephone call or bang on the door in need or a guitar head or guitar strap. Not a very good solution but hey, I may look like I think I know it all but I don't think that at all.

I have thought long and hard where to post this tome of a post, but I blieve this is probably the best as it deals directly with issues in this thread. So sorry if it interupts the convo flow above but I hope you all can pick apart and get the best from this moun of turd.

I am willing to help or to completely compile the said band data base. If anyone has any ideas post or PM me. Even if this 'Info-Kit' or 'Profile' doesn't take off I am still interested in compiling all the info that I can get through subtle hints and some pretty horrible torture techniques I learnt at an al-roberta training camp I frequented when studyng Fundamentalist Christianity at various Christian schools around Wanganui. Such as lectures on why AC/DC is the music of Satan, and why the peace symbol is a sign of the Devil ( as its a fallen cross ...ie the crosses arms have fallen down, which I aways thought was a good thing as then Jesus would not have suffocated!!!!
