Old news I know, but I was just doing a random Google search for German band Atari Teenage Riot and found out that their album The Future of War, released in 1997, was placed on "the index" in Germany on the 8th of May 2002 - meaning that it is illegal to sell it in public. The timing (years after the album's release, but just a few months after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the U.S.A.) is very interesting to say the least.
Atari Teenage Riot's "technoise" music is certainly very aggressively anarchistic, but I also think that it's beautiful in a "something worth fighting for" kind of way. Here are some sample lyrics from the boldly titled song "Destroy 2000 Years of Culture" off The Future of War:
Quote: Move! I shout it out loud!
We're radical and we're proud of it...
Change the things - together we stand and load the gun and make 'em swing!
Love is a wonderful thing - a secret - a game
And I sing the song of the freedom to hate!
Try to think international!
(I have altered some of the lyrics' punctuation from how it is printed in the album cover, such as it all being in capital letters, and the roughly 40 exclaimation marks at the end of the last line!)
I vaguely remember someone telling me about The Future of War being banned in Germany around the time it happened (around the time that I started listening to ATR, and thrashing them on Radio Control, of all things), but here's what ATR's Alec Empire had to say about it, as found at http://www.digitalhardcore.com/News_Item.asp?News_ID=76:
Quote: Alec Empire speaks on the banning of ATARI TEENAGE RIOT's "Future Of War" in Germany!
The record Future Of War by my band ATARI TEENAGE RIOT was placed on the index in Germany on the 8th of May 2002. To keep a long story short, this means it is forbidden to sell this music in public.
The record was released worldwide in spring 1997 and has sold about 200.000 units. When international artists, for example the Beastie Boys (who released the record on their own label Grand Royal for the U.S.) or Beck (who, after he heard the record once, invited the band to support him on his U.S.-tour) explored our music, this record got huge attention and recognition because of it‘s left-rooted crtitque of the "modern" high-tech-war, as we had seen it all some years previously during the Gulf War.
It‘s a warning of a Germany that strategically ignores it‘s own hostility towards foreigners (as well as the inherent anti-Semitism and racism) because of its over-ambitious national pride, and therefore tolerates the crimes and violence committed by the extreme right and neo-nazis.
The international media welcomed the musically and lyrically clear signal from a Germany which was more famous during that time for skinheads and the regular burning of asylum homes. This record is a call for change, and the kind of emotion and rage expressed on there was seen as absolutely necessary.
We are frightened and angered about the ban of the record in Germany. In my eyes, musicians, artists, authors and film makers have the duty to criticise, to have visions and to speak about subject, that others would like to remain silent about. You can always criticise, discuss and argue about the individual artistic approach and method - and at the end of the day that’s what it is all about!
This is not a matter of taste; this is about the freedom to form and express one’s own opinions as well as artistic freedoms. A lot of people in our society seem to have forgotten how important these basic rights are.
To all those who perceive this as a "marketing campaign“ I can only say this: The record is almost six years old and we don`t expect any sudden chart positions (this isn’t possible at all, remember: The record is banned on the index). So why are we going public?
Because laws and censorships like this kind of thing have the potential to one day be applied to all parts of the media until it is impossible to publish independent reporting and to criticise in public (watch Italy).
Whether you like this record or not, you must understand that it is wrong that it is placed on the index.

I hate the censorship thing..... ATR is an example I didn't know about. Sure it is fine hearing Bush telling us all his opinions, but when someone else tells of theirs, (often some opinion that tells truth or is threatening to those in power) they are often crushed quickly. Personally, I kind of sit on the fence on alot of issues, simply because I can see good and bad arguments from both sides of the story. At least I can take in both sides of the story and make a decision for myself. Many issues though I would definately lean to the left on, not everything, but most of the crap that comes from Bush's mouth I do not like at all..... back to censorship... I am dribbling again...... Reminds me of the court cases that Twisted Sisters Dee Snider (vocalisat) was involved in, in the USA, inthe 80s. A bunch of good Christian folk reckon the devil was on the radio, so started the huge censorship campaign to get the devil off the radio. This was around the time that Judas Preist had their back masking "do it" court cases. One of the examples I remember these good chritian mothers using was the John Denver song "Rocky Mountain High". They reckoned John was tellign his story of going into the mountains and getting spliffed off his nut..... when really he was just admiring nature. What came out of that campaign though was the small rectangular parental guidance/ explicit lyrics or what ever it says symbol that most of the CDs I buy these days (slayer ) has on the front cover. basically if it has this warning sign, then it is a good bet that I will enjoy it a little more than if it doen't, and I think the good christian folks campaign actually worked against what they were trying to achieve..... the devil is still on the radio, but I guess god is also there, and making quite an impact right now. Can't have one wiithout the other I guess. Yay for twisted sister and john denver (bless his soul). None of this is new to any of you who are regulars on this forum probably, but wanbted to share some thoughts....ok will stop rambling now. Elvis was a messenger for the devil was he not?

Thats why Eminem had so much 'beef' with her.
Quote:
So to the parents of America
I am the derringer aimed at little Erica to attack her character
The ringleader of this circus of worthless pawns
Sent to lead the march right up to the steps of Congress
and piss on the lawns of the White House
To burn the flag and replace it with a Parental Advisory sticker
To spit liquor in the faces of this democracy of hypocrisy
Fuck you Ms. Cheney! Fuck you Tipper Gore!
Fuck you with the free-est of speech
this Divided States of Embarassment will allow me to have
Fuck you!
