My three favorite Vietnam films of all time. Which do like better and why?

After much soul searching I've gone with 'The Deerhunter'.
Reasons:
#5: You see the events in the central character's lives leading up to the war, during the war and dealing with the aftermath.
#4: It's about Vietnam but could you could remake it to reflect any modern war scenario and still have a compelling and relevant story.
#3: Robert De Niro is in the film.
#2: Christopher Walken is in the film doing what he does best (playing a crazed man at the end of his rope).
#1: The Viet Cong "Tiger Hole" scene in the water with the Russian Roulette going on. THE most intense scene in a movie that I've ever seen. "Di di mao!"

Na that's bullshit,
Both the deer hunter and apocalypse now are self indulgent art wank.
Full metal jacket from memory...
"What's that peace sign on your helmet boy?"
"I dunno sir, i geuss it's a statement about the duality of man sir"
"Boy you better get on board for the big win"
In the back ground a mass grave of vietnamese people is being limed and filled in.

'Apocalypse Now' esp the recent 'Redux' version is the better of the films, that doesn't lessen the other two as they are both brilliant in their own right, but AN is the better.
I mean come on... directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, Laurence Fishburne, Dennis Hopper and Harrison Ford!!!
"We must kill them. We must incinerate them. Pig after pig. Cow after cow. Village after village. Army after army." - Kurtz
"You either surf or you fight." - Kilgore
Now I'm a huge Kubrick fan, but I always considered Full Metal Jacket to be two films... pre-'Nam and 'Nam, Deerhunter is brilliant too but its just not as good as AN, it's different I guess.

Sorry I gotta say Platoon beats them all hands down,
Full Metal Jackets realistic visuals are awesome but once in Nam the actual story of the movie goes down hill fast The special effects and the correct TANKS ( yay! doesn't happen that often) are the best out of all these movies. It raises heap of issues of military training and the problems squad based combat incounters in built up urban inviroments etc
Apocolypse Now is ripped off Heart of Darkness, so its just an adaption to Vietnam not a true Vietnam movie. I like it for a disturbing ride but to much wank. Its I supposea Vietnam movie but not a Vietnam War movie really. BUT the airmobile assualt on that village blasting 'Ride of the Valkries' is a perhaps the best action scene ever in a war movie..I reckon IMHO. The shear scale of the helicopter assualt is mind boggling.
The Deer Hunter I haven't seen for a very long time though I remember it mostly from the parody in Meet The Feebles hahaha. It is definatly an awesome movie, and is probably second best film wise, though I like Full Metal Jcket better for entertainment.
but Platoon on the otherhand is a fuckin masterpiece, not to mention based on Oliver Stones personal experience and actions in the war. Not to mention the other 2 movies of his unofficial Vietnam trilogy 'Born on the Fourth of July', and 'Heaven and Earth'.
It may sound like I'm sucking his cock but I like F.M.J. better than the 2 movies I just mentioned
Anyway, Platoon. I find I have more emotional attachment to the characters in Platoon, I care heap more for them when they get wasted. The narration is great, the 'grittiness'-like F.M.J is bloddy as, and Charlie Sheen ...is he actually acting? Why yes he is hahaha.
The whole theme of the two role models betweem Elias and Barnes is fuckin awesome, imagine having that son of a bitch as your boss! Fuck that.
If anyone else has seen the Special Edition with the docos and interviews you'll get my drift when speaking about the realism and get this, Oliver Stone showed it to his old platoon buddies ( who the characters are based off) before it being realesed and they loved it. Fuck it suggests some bad things about people , I'd be afraid of someone beating my arse!
oh, plus the Elias death scene with 'Adagio for Strings' is fuckin terrifingly haunting, sends sivers up me everytime!
my favourite quote of the film
" What you guys smoke this shit to escape from reality, me I don't need this shit...I am reality"
Barnes just after his attempted frag of elias, as he stands there holding a bottle of scotch!!!! Typical hypocrite redneck!
BTW I saw Hamburger Hill not to long ago and I can't believe how poo that movie is, I used to think it was great.......
( I can't belive than horrid fuckin house or trance or fuckinwhatever butcher of 'Adagio for Strings' fuck if you cant PLAY an instrument don't even attempt a cover you over zealos sample monkeys
man they ruined it forever the bastards. )

Apocolypse Now is the best one. By a long shot. The redux version is totally the shit! How he managed to make a movie that long so good I'll never know. It's like your taking a journey... like a slow trippy roller-coaster... and the opening scene where he's losing it in his room is fucking great!
Full Metal Jackets a great movie as well. But some what disjointed. It does however have some of the best lines ever:
Drill sgt: Where you from soldier?
grunt: Texas sir!
Drill sgt: Texas? Only queers and steers come from Texas Boy! And you don't look like a cow!
Thats Redneck poetry! The brains on the wall scene is nice and graphic too.
The Deerhunter I haven't seen for years so I can't comment. But It's not Apocolypse Now so it can smb.
Platoon is an ok war movie. A bit like the way Saving Private Ryan is an ok war movie.

The best war film I've seen recently is called Come and See. It's about russian partizans during the nazi invasion in WW2.
It's ruloz arse. Opening scene is a twelve year old boy digging up a dead nazi to steal his gun so he can join the partizans and kill more nazis!
