Hey peoples!

Was wondering what your opinion on there being a door charge of about $8 (instead of the usual $5) for a Factory show?

As you all know - The Factory has been great at making sure local and national (and sometimes even International bands) get a chance to play live in a setting other than a R18 Bar/Venue. Also coupled with the fact that you can smoke and drink up there is a total BONUS!!!

I really wanna stay involved with keeping shows going at THE FACTORY on a regular scale but with the venue-hireage-charge that is required I'd say it would be very hard to break even if door charges weren't raised. (BTW: I consider a show a success financially if all overheads for running a show is recovered from the door charge - it's even better if I can pay the bands some petrol money).

So - DO YOU THINK PAYING $8 FOR A FACTORY SHOW IS TOO EXPENSIVE.

Cheers.

what's the going rate for this these days...
The Factory has had some excellent shows over the last year or so so would be good for it to keep going.
:)

on the whole $8 is cool there have been some bloody good line up's & it used to be $10 @ times @ Bar Mode etc & considering you can take your own piss is still a cheap night out. as for hirage we've been told ( & i stand to be corrected if wrong ) that it's $150 for venue/security then $100 for pa = $250 i know for a fact that G.O.W? can't afford/refuse to pay this

That figure is pretty much the reason why I'm asking this question. The thing is that these costs would be covered by the door charge. I guess if the show fails to cover the initial overheads then that's when whoever/whichever band is organizing the show would need to front up the rest of the money.

With my calculations you'd need to probably get about 35-40 paying punters in order to break even. Punk, Hardcore, and Metal shows in July were getting almost double this figure. I guess it all depends on the bands to some degree.

The other cool thing about Factory shows (man I sound like a salesman) is that it has a core group of people who go and aren't even into the bands or the music. They just want a place to hang out with their mates and drink piss and smoke.

I shall ponder further and see what happens.

$5 successions man!
Make it $10!
$8 is a pain in the groin "Oh man I need another $1" "Have you got change for a $50?"

$10 is a cheap night when you get to see great bands and are not paying $7 out your arsehole to get pissed up for the night.

yeh, with the BYO thing $8 is quite reasonable, especially when you need to cover $250. but $10 would be way easier to deal with for the door.

Maybe the answer is to have a trail run @ $10 entry & for this event the bands don't wear it if it goes pear shaped, $10 entry & a bottle of vino is still under a tenner so bloody cheap night out the only thing i would say is that which ever band organizes a show would still have to have $s in the kitty if there was not enough punters, as much as we all love playing the pot at the end of the rainbow is somewhat empty for some  & Andy your a star for once more taking up the mantle

10$ for bands is fair providing they are good............,$ 150 $ 250 for an UNLICENSED venue not very fair Unless the factory takes care of posters and advertising ,booze, drugs, food, beds etc etc . Security, so yous are hiring professional security then cause for that money i can play in wellington {OR ANYWHERE ELSE} and get all the benefits and still have change. hmmmm we agree with G.o.w. Damn glad we played there before money took over.

Factory might need a make over as well, better lighting etc etc, not just a room that demands huge costs

so kia, the bands have to fill the factory's pockets, what costs to be recouped??? lolololololol, Want a unlicensed venue m8, have a party then, still be cheoper

Thats pretty unfair. They have costs they have to recoup and they also have to make it worth it to them to put on shows.
Unlicensed venues are a tradition in Palmy, one which I think is worth keeping around.

Hold up brother! I still haven't made a decision if I'm gonna stay involved with organizing shows at Factory like I used to before I cruised off on my holiday. Anybody here is still able to contact Rich Naylor and organize their own show.

Cheers for the response to this question of mine everybody.

It's good to know that people here think an $8 door charge isn't a huge leap from $5 and that most of you think $10 could also work aswell. I'm still a little concerned with the younger punters who come to the Factory shows. $8 is probably do-able but $10 might be out of the question for them. I'm still a bit hesitant in going all the way to $10.

The Factory deserves to get something for having the shows. But I guess if the cost is too much for bands, they just won't play there.

Keir*

Do you go round to all gig venues requesting them to itemise what all their costs are?
I dont think it should be a concern of yours. Either play there or dont.
You should be thankful there is a venue to play at all, I remember venue famines throughout the years and they were desperate times.
Like I said before, these dudes need to make it worth it to them to put on shows, nuff said, pay the good man.

riek
Someone had to point out the cons out weigh the pros for this Venue
i can go all day man

"Either play there or dont"...., played there 3 times, i have no intention on playing there anytime soon

"You should be thankful there is a venue to play at all"....im thankful the royal is licensed and let bands play there again

"I remember venue famines throughout the years and they were desperate times."... this has no bearing on the current topic at hand

"Like I said before, these dudes need to make it worth it to them to put on shows".....I agree fully BUT needs to be more attractive for quality bands to play and get the paying numbers in to meet said quota

"pay the good man." ....If the price is right absolutely and the venue meets certain standards of quality ie Lighting, hmm and a theme maby. a differant one for differant night or for differant bands, U want the money u gota spend the money Simple

hahahahahahahaha , if im to organise a venue, DAMN STRAIGHT ILL ASK THEM WHAT I\we PAYING FOR, FOR EVERY LAST CENT ASWELL

Fuk it anyway, hopefully Andy will take it on again and give back the venue its Mojo it once had

Stay brutal Fukkers
