They might be a bunch of bogans, but the people behind Slave Collective say they have one mission - to help all Manawatu musicians with whatever they need.

Spokesman Murray Shaw says it all started when he was playing in bands in the early 1990s.

"There were quite a few [musicians] flatting together in local flats, and we decided to combine and start working together.

"We realised if we all worked together, it would be easier to put music out."

Since the turn of the century, Shaw and other musicians have helped release dozens of albums and put on countless shows around Palmerston North.

They can be as small as a flat gig or as big as Beastwars' recent show at The Royal Hotel.

Shaw says it is simply about helping where they can.

"For a band starting out they won't know what to do.

"They do not know how to get a show, so that is the sort of thing we try to help with.

"When people get a show they come along and see what we do, then they can do it."

Musicians learning how to put on shows can only be a good thing for the scene, he says.

Slave Collective know a lot about doing things themselves - members put together their own website, release albums for artists and even run merchandising for some acts.

Shaw says the collective is centred on heavier music and says that is because, "that's what we're into, and people are attracted to the same kind of thing".

"Maybe there's just lots of local bogans."

The next big project for the collective is a compilation of Manawatu music, which was given $500 funding by Creative New Zealand.

The release will feature more than just metal, Shaw says.

"It's pretty much a case of how many bands we can put on the CD.

"There so many different bands here and we're keen to help them all."

I'd hoped he'd include the following, but it was limited by space
Quote:
As well as putting on shows, releasing local music including our upcoming local compilation cd, and promoting local bands through slave.co.nz.
Laura Sutherland and I do the Palmy local music show at 7pm on tuesday nights on Radio Control 99.4fm. We do it on a roster with other local musos like Nigel Joyce(last nights doorman at the Beastwars show) and Jemma Cheer which means we all do it about once a month.
Also, the current list of Slave Collective bands is Turbostill, Bloodspray for Politics,Project: Blood, Wall of Silents,Defetus, Grief Giver, Triple metal bypass, Deaths door and Crackpot theory.
There is a full list of all the current and no longer active slave bands on the band page on the slave website.
We also have contributors like Stephen Hood who updates the website, Max Guy who looks after the bank account and finances.
Markham wightman and Willy Konfuzion who do the sound engineering, and a number of other contributors including Kris Cummerfield,Rob Allan,
James Rothnie,Jay Silents, and all the members of the bands in the collective
