The death metal band vocalist at the centre of a Wellington homicide inquiry died as a result of ferocious attack while in bed, police say.

Matthew John Hall, who went by the stage name "Blaps Warmonger", was found dead by a flatmate at his Johnsonville flat on Tuesday. The 35-year-old died from multiple stab wounds.

Hall was a long-serving member of the popular Wellington death metal band Backyard Burial, formed by a group of school friends in Lower Hutt in 1998.

The officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton, says an autopsy examination carried out on the body showed "he died from a ferocious attack whilst in his bed".

Thornton says the focus of the inquiry now is to find the person or people responsible for his brutal murder.

"Whilst we are keeping an open mind as to how Matthew met his death, we are still in the early stages of the investigation and it is the public who will help us solve this."

Numerous tributes have been left on the band's Facebook page, with many calling Hall's death "a great loss" to the metal music scene.

Manager of Wellington bar Medusa, Tamara Buckland, said the band members were "devastated" as they had known Hall for a very long time.

"He was an amazing guy," she said.

Backyard Burial released their debut album, titled Symptoms of Psychopathology, in 1999.

It was describe as the "long-awaited highly anticipated" debut album, which had "ten tracks of trademark Backyard Burial death/grind with guttural vocals, insane blasting and destructively rhythmic guitar chuggery".

On the band's website and Facebook page, Hall was listed under the name "Blaps "Chomper" Warmonger, Vocals".

A cordon was around the house - which is set back from the road and surrounded by trees - as 30 investigators worked on the case yesterday.

A neighbour said he came home on Tuesday night to hear yelling from the man's flatmate and see police in the driveway.

"I came home to hear a bit of hollering and that was it."

He had known the two men "a little bit", in a neighbourly fashion, and was disturbed by the death.

House owner and landlord How Yee Hong said the two men had lived there for seven or eight years with no problems.

Thornton said the flatmate had to be calmed down by police after finding the body. He had gone to stay with friends.

"He is quite upset about what he has discovered, and was speaking to us last night for quite some time."

No weapon had been found and it was unclear what the cause of death was at this point.

"[There are] some injuries, but we'll be leaving that up to the pathologist to determine."

Police would talk to neighbours to find out if anyone had seen any suspicious activity. They called for witnesses, including taxi or courier drivers who may have been in the area, to come forward.

A motive was not yet clear, he said. "It's like putting the pieces of a jigsaw back together."

Police want to hear from anyone who was in the Broderick Road area on Tuesday 15 February 2011 in the afternoon and early evening, who

A Wellington man who was stabbed to death in a "ferocious" attack at his Johnsonville home worked as a mental health consultant.

Matthew John Hall, 35, who was found dead by his flatmate on Tuesday, was a consumer consultant for Capital & Coast DHB's alcohol and drug services and general adult mental health services.

He was also a long-serving member of Wellington death-metal band Backyard Burial, which formed in Lower Hutt in 1998. He was the lead singer of the band and went by the stage name Blaps "Chomper" Warmonger.

Yesterday the band's Facebook page was covered with tributes, many lamenting Mr Hall's death as a great loss to the Wellington music scene. Band members declined to comment when contacted.

Drug and alcohol councillor Roger Brooking said his wife knew Mr Hall through her work with the community alcohol and drug service.

"She said he was a lovely chap and he didn't have an aggressive bone in his body and he would never have provoked anybody, and she was absolutely mystified that he appears to have suffered a violent death."

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton said an autopsy showed the attack on Mr Hall was ferocious and "brutal" as he lay in his bed.

The dedicated phone number set up for the investigation, 0508 Broderick, had netted a good response, but police would like to hear from as many people as possible. If anyone knew anything or had seen someone entering or leaving the address between midday on Monday and 6pm on Tuesday, they should call, he said.

When asked if Mr Hall's work or band were a point of interest, Mr Thornton said police were investigating his personal life as a matter of course.

"We're looking into his background. That includes where he worked, his friends, what he did in his spare time. That's part of the investigation, we sort of profile the victims so we can understand who he socialised with and what he did."

Mr Hall's flatmate, who discovered his body, was still quite upset and staying with friends, Mr Thornton said.

A "person of interest" in the investigation into the murder of Wellington metal singer Matthew Hall was found dead three weeks after the brutal killing, police have revealed.

The man, who police say was also involved in the metal scene, was hit by a train on March 5. His death was not believed to be suspicious and was referred to the Coroner.

Matthew Hall, 35, a mental health worker, was stabbed to death while he slept at his home in Broderick Road, Johnsonville, on the evening of February 15.

At the time of the killing, police said it was one of the most ferocious and vicious attacks they had seen.

No arrests have been made in the case.

The murder weapon, believed to be a large serrated knife, has not been found despite many searches.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton, the officer in charge of Investigation Broderick, said the dead man was among a number of people being interviewed by police as part of the inquiry.

"He was a person in the death metal scene. They [the man and Matt] knew of each other. They were not in the same band," Thornton said.

He was reluctant to use the word "suspect", saying only the dead man had been a "person of interest".

"We are continuing to run a large homicide operation and I remain confident that we will find those responsible for Matthew's brutal murder," he said.

However, Thornton said there was no indication there had been more than one person involved in the murder.

In recent weeks, police had conducted a number of area canvases in Broderick Rd.

Items found in various searches and at Hall's home were still being forensically examined. It would be some time until police had their results.

Police were trying to establish whether a dark grey Nissan Primera had been in Broderick Rd on the night that Hall was killed.

As part of the investigation detectives had also interviewed Hall's flatmate and friend of more than 10 years, who found his body about 6pm on February 15.

He was the last person to see Hall alive, on the previous night.

On that night, police know Hall attended a band practice in Wainuiomata in the late afternoon, and bought dinner from Woolworths Johnsonville about 11pm before returning home.

They have not disclosed any details of his activities on the day that he was killed.

He had taken annual leave the previous day, but police said earlier that they were unsure what he spent the day doing.

It's still at the "person of interest" stage, I'm waiting to see what comes out in the news.

A man who confessed to the brutal murder of Matthew Hall was killed by a train hours after being questioned by detectives.

Police were warned that he was suicidal and the woman to whom he confessed pleaded for him to be given help.

Timothy Parlane's death is now the subject of an Independent Police Conduct Authority investigation, a Dominion Post investigation has learnt.

Police insist the murder investigation is still active – even though Mr Parlane told the woman he went to Mr Hall's Johnsonville house with two knives and stabbed him. Mr Parlane and Mr Hall, who were both in death-metal bands, had fallen out.

The woman has spoken to The Dominion Post because she is angry that police did not heed her warning that Mr Parlane was suicidal. "I told them I was seriously concerned for his mental health. I feel that he was absolutely let down by the system," she said.

Mr Parlane's father, Martyn, said he had not been told of the IPCA investigation into his son's death. "We are mourning the loss of a dear, gentle son who would never do any harm to anyone."

Police would not comment on whether they had done enough to monitor Mr Parlane, citing the pending coronial hearing and IPCA inquiry. They said Mr Parlane was a "person of interest" before he died but further inquiries were still needed to advance the investigation.

The woman said she met Mr Parlane, 27, at a bar about two weeks after the February 15 murder. They went on several dates.

On March 2, he told her he was going to the police station for a "routine" chat about the murder inquiry. Late that night, he came to her house. "When I opened the door, he didn't even move. He had tears in his eyes. I said: 'Tim, oh God, what's happened?'

"He said: 'There's things that I need to tell you and I don't know what to say.' He was in tears and desperate to tell somebody something. I sat there and held his hands, I looked him right in his eyes.

"He said, 'I've done something terrible.' I said, 'Why, was it you?' He just nodded."

The woman later told police that Mr Parlane said he went to Mr Hall's house during the day. It had been easier to get inside than he expected.

"He said, 'I was expecting to have to break in or knock on the door.' He said: 'I just walked in and found him in bed.'

"He said: 'I took two knives with me and a change of clothes.' I said: 'Why on earth would you need two?' And he said: 'Just as well I took two, because he fought back.'

"He said so many times 'He's a bad person, he's a terrible person and it had to be done."'

Afterwards, he told her he spent a long time in the house cleaning up. He took bleach and sheets of industrial plastic. "He said ... 'I wrapped up all this stuff and I made a big bundle and I put it in the car and I went for a big, long drive and I went for a big, long walk and I buried it at such and such."'

When she asked where he had buried the items, he became "cagey", she said.

He told her he had a list of things he wished to do before he died. One was skydiving – another was murder.

He had been involved in the heavy-metal music scene, once belonging to Wellington band Bulletbelt. But after falling out with friends, he was labelled a "nark", he told the woman.

He attended a concert in a hall where Mr Hall's band was performing last year. He told the woman that Mr Hall had dedicated a song to him called Death to Narks.

"He said he felt devastated by the whole thing and left the hall."

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton said police were "aware of this information". It was being considered as part of the investigation.

During his confession, Mr Parlane made no mention of how he felt, the woman said.

"When I spoke to him, the only emotion in his tears was that he was afraid police were getting too close to him. There was nothing to do with guilt, there was nothing to do with remorse.

"It was almost like he'd achieved what he wanted to achieve but now he was afraid for his own future."

After he left, the woman did not tell police immediately. "I thought my best plan of attack would be to just act normal and go down in the morning when I was sure he wasn't following me."

She stayed up and wrote everything he told her in a diary. Police had since seized the diary as evidence, she said.

The next day, Thursday, March 3, she went to the police station. The interview lasted all day. She repeatedly told police that she had serious concerns for Mr Parlane's mental health, warning them he was a suicide risk.

"There is no way I could have made it any clearer. Even in my video interview, they said: 'Is there anything else you want to say?' I said: 'I want you to know I am terrified he is going to kill himself.'

"I told them categorically, in detail, I told them about what he had said, I told them inside out and back to front that this is going to happen," the woman said.

The next day, Friday, March 4, police picked up Mr Parlane for questioning, and let him go later that afternoon.

"The detective rang me to say: 'We were not able to hold him but we have issued him with a protection order for you and a trespass order.'

"I begged them to hold him, but they said 'We can't'."

At 2.09pm, after being freed by police, Mr Parlane sent a text to the woman. It read: "Disappointing".

He was hit by a train near Kaiwharawhara that night.

Mr Thornton confirmed he had visited the woman with another detective the next day to inform her of Mr Parlane's death.

When asked whether police could confirm that the woman had repeatedly raised issues relating to the potential suicide risk during her interview, Mr Thornton said: "We're not able to comment on this question, given Mr Parlane's death is subject to a coronial inquiry and an IPCA inquiry."

This answer was repeated when he was asked whether police were satisfied that appropriate steps had been taken to monitor Mr Parlane after the interview.

Police also refused to confirm that Mr Parlane had been interviewed on the day of his death, or what he had said.

"It is not prudent to discuss this in the media," Mr Thornton said. "The investigation into Matthew Hall's murder remains an active one. To comment on such matters could compromise the investigation."

But he would say that a scene examination had been completed at Mr Parlane's former address in Ava St, Lower Hutt.

Police said a woman had visited Mr Parlane at his house about 11pm on February 14, the day before the murder, and they urged her to contact them.

Mr Hall's father declined to comment yesterday.
